The Roblox version of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Spongy Construction Project is a fan-made online multiplayer and role-playing video game based on the iconic SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, and an experience on the Roblox platform. In this game, you can play as 8 of the main cast of the show with each having unique animations, costumes and more.
Work for this version has completely ended in favor of the Godot port, but is still available under the "Obby Rush!" experience due to previous takedowns from Paramount Global, but will be getting no support.
Gameplay[]
The Spongy Construction Project acts an online multiplayer game that incorporates mechanics commonly found in roleplay games. The game features a total of eight playable characters, various of which having one or more skins, these characters can be switched between whenever the player wants. The game currently features eight worlds, two of which being inaccessible. These worlds include: Conch Street, Krusty Krab and Chum Bucket, Downtown Bikini Bottom, Jellyfish Fields, Rock Bottom, Glove World!, Sandy's Treedome, and Goo Lagoon. Each world contains their own locations and landmarks that the player can explore. The movement mechanics remain consistent across all characters, with each being able to walk, run, and jump. The only exception of this being Plankton, who, due to his small size, moves much slower than the rest of the cast.
The game also features a variety of items the player can acquire, such as consumables and wearables. Several items have unique abilities, most notably the Bubble Wand and Bubble Trident. Additionally, several items are exclusive to the games' admins, such as the very powerful Trident item.
The game features a minigame called the Krabby Patty Cooking Minigame, which can be activated in the Krusty Krab's kitchen. Other minigames, such as Tidal Toss! and an unnamed one have been teased but have yet to be added.
Due to being built on Roblox, the game features several built in Roblox mechanics, such as the chat system, which allow players to converse, perform emotes, and (previously) say voice lines, and badges, which were present in many versions of the game.
In the official Discord server for the game, several gameplay features have been added to the "upcoming updates" section, such as a future Jellyfishing minigame, a wallet system, a fridge, and most notably, a housing system.[1]

The Spongy Construction Project began development on April 6, 2016[3] under the name "SpongeBob Roleplay," which was co-created by both spongeis5 and CodyJnutt.[4] The game was created because spongeis5 and a few of his friends wanted to create a SpongeBob roleplay game similar to the then popular Paper Mario Roleplay game on Roblox. The game at the time was much less advanced than the current version of the game, and does not resemble it much, featuring a more open world landscape, as well as models and textures taken from other official SpongeBob games. Also at this time, the game had a smaller team of developers (most of which are still working on the game to this date).
Development for the game started picking up around December 2021, with it releasing on the 30th. The game was completely reworked, with high quality new visuals and lore-accurate locations. As a result of their efforts, the game gained a lot of popularity, with around 8 million visits at the time.
However on June 24, 2022, the game got taken down due to a copyright sent by Paramount[5], and one of the co-creators of the game[4], spongeis5, created a tweet about this situation[6]. He stated that him and the development team had contacted Paramount several times, but to no avail, receive a response. This and the follow up tweets gained a lot of traction, and many people had voiced their opinions online, mostly stating that it was a wrong decision on Paramount's side, due to the fact that game was being non-profit. Several people had also stated that the official Nickelodeon Roblox game "Nickverse" had to do with the game being taken down, but spongeis5 clarified that the Nickverse developers had nothing to do with the situation. After several months, the company still never responded.
On April 1, 2023, the game unexpectedly came back online after many teases on their official Twitter and Discord server, as well as open testing draw.[7] The game had regular updates, adding new features regularly. On June 28th, 2023, they announced a 3D animated opening cutscene with voice acting,[8] although later that same day, the game unexpectedly got taken down again.[9]
The developers then uploaded a new joke game titled "The Bungy Gungy Roject" shortly after the takedown, which they updated and changed several times. This game was later made private a few hours after release. When asked about when the game will come back, the developer "CodyJnutt" responded by saying the game will come back when it's ready to come back.[10] When another developer "Dervinci" was asked if the game will come back, he replied by saying that he isn't too sure,[11] and that it isn't a definite answer right now.[12] On July 7th, 2023, they held a poll on their Twitter and Discord asking if they should hire a new developer, with two options: "Create a listing," or "Do not hire."[13] Later that same day "JimmysToenuts" was added to the development team. On July 8th, 2023, they announced that they will be posting a developer application, with five slots open.[14] On the 15th of July, they posted the application form on Google Forms[15] and on October 12th, 2023, another user "Manny20453" was recruited.
On October 15, 2023 however, it was confirmed on the game's Twitter that the game would return, and about an hour later, the game was back up on the Roblox platform, adding several new features. However, this comeback was short-lived, because 5 days later on October 20th, 2023, at around 7:10 PM, the game once again taken down by Paramount, no further details were confirmed.
On October 22, 2023, it was announced that the game was going to move from Roblox to Unreal Engine 4, where it was likely to be released on itch.io. Not much was revealed about this move, and in early 2024, it was announced that the move had been cancelled due to the success of the Obby Rush! cover up game stated below.
On December 26, 2023, a secret version of the game's third run was reuploaded, where it can only be accessed after beating the game "Obby Rush!". It was stated many times that this version would not get any updates, however, up until January 13, 2024, the game finally got its first update, with updates now happening regularly. This is likely where the game will stay until a takedown, which is a possibility that is very unlikely.

On October 6, 2024, at approximately 11:56 PM, popular Roblox YouTuber Flamingo uploaded a video titled "Playing real BANNED Roblox games." In this video, he takes a look through a number of Roblox experiences that have been 'banned,' one of these being The Spongy Construction Project.[16] Due to Albert's large following, the game instantly skyrocketed its active player count, reaching an average of ~200 mere minutes after its release.
After the Halloween Event had ended, updates for the game happened very rarely, this was however explained on April 25, 2025, after 5 days of teasers, a port of the game to the open-source game engine Godot was announced on the game's official Discord server. In this announcement, it was said that the new version would feature new shaders, improved and bouncier animations, and remain as an online game, playable on both web and PC, and potentially as a web game. It was stated that the Roblox version would no longer receive updates while development shifts to the port.

First Run[]
In this first run of the game, the title screen depicts the Bikini Atoll island in the background, while the game's old logo rests on the right side of the screen. The green play button is on the bottom middle of the screen, and the initials "W.I.P" typed boldly on the very top right corner.

In the second run of the game, the title screen stayed relatively the same, besides the logo being updated to the current one.

Third Run[]
For the third and current run, the title screen was completely revamped with brand new assets. This title card now features the game's logo in the middle, rocking back and forth, in front of a bright blue-sky background with a bright spinning sun. There are also visible blue jellyfishes swimming in the background a text reading "CLICK ANYWHERE TO CONTINUTE" lays below the logo and a brand-new original music track plays in the background.
This is also the first version of the title screen to feature the version number, which is displayed at the bottom right.
